Do I Really Need a College Degree?

In August 2011, I started on my journey to get a college degree from an accredited private university. I thought I wanted to be an orthodontist. Then I thought I wanted to go into advertising. I think after that it was just general communications, then maybe marketing...

The point is, I tried a lot of different things. I even got pretty close to graduating in marketing; however, while I was taking marketing classes I started to code my own websites for some side hustles I was interested in. AND I LOVED TO CODE! It was quite the revelation for me, because I thought I never really wanted a traditional desk job. Joke's on me, because I've been in web development now for the last 4 years or so.

You and me both, emo T-Swift. You and me both...

That being said... I make what I think is pretty decent money, and I still don't have a degree. Yup, that's right. I am a business owner, a web developer, a designer, and a marketer. I've never gotten any piece of paper that tells me what I can or can not do though.

And I don't think I'm unique in that way. My in-house designer also doesn't have a degree. My brother-in-law owns a marketing business– no degree for him either. We see this trend more and more these days as entrepreneurship is more widely accessible (I believe because of technology more than anything).

Does this post even have a point?

My answer though is this:

I don't know any better than you do. A degree can open up doors for people that could never have been opened for them in any other way. Some people get lucky. Some people have a lot of drive and self-motivation. Other people just need a degree.

In my case, perhaps a degree would better equip me for future projects. Maybe it would give clients more confidence or allow me to avoid common mistakes that I have to learn on my own. Or it could have given me connections and ideas that would have made me hundreds of millions of dollars.

Who's to say? Maybe I'll make hundreds of millions of dollars without one.
